Streaming professional games as a Minnesota Sports fan is not for the weak minded. Fox Sports North (or maybe even My29) used to be the go-to channel on cable to watch as many Timberwolves, Twins, Lynx and Wild games as a fan could but that all changed after Bally Sports North took over and streaming became the new norm. It makes me think the downfall of Blockbuster’s and their ability to rent movies to you instead of having them at our fingertips was actually where our world began its downfall.
But I digress. Bally Sports North took over FSN back in 2021 and with it, was a $20 a month cost to stream games. This would have been a decent price if it hadn’t been for the Twins being completely taken by the MLB network or their Twins.TV. Once the channel was reduced to three teams, the games to watch became even fewer with the amount of black outs. When a streaming service can’t keep exclusive rights to more than half the games being played, $20 a month sounds more and more steep. Bally Sports, their business model and the parent company surprisingly went bankrupt and was rebranded to FanDuel Sports Network in 2024. This went over about the same although the amount of black out games did decrease.
Finally, we fast forward to today. The owner of FanDuel Networks is missing payments and is threatening to dissolve. It was reported on Fox 9 that the Timberwolves and Lynx will now be streamed with DAZN. This does not come with a monthly price at the moment and also doesn’t let us know who will be calling the games. DAZN is teasing that fans can watch up to 15 games for free as well. This may be good news, but questions still need to be answered. Wild fans are left with their own broadcasting service that is yet to be named and the Twins are on their own with MLB. The only way us Minnesota fans can be happy with everything is if Big TV Corp makes cable affordable again.
